Employee Count Ranking of 23 Major General Contractors | 2021 edition
In this issue of the “State of General Contractors” series, which provides an overview of the status of Japan’s major general contractors based on their business performance, etc., we will introduce the employee count rankings of the 23 major general contractors based on the number of employees employed by each company in the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2021.
Considering the fact that general contractors are generally classified according to their company size, we will introduce the following in detail.

1. Employee count ranking of the 23 major general contractors
First, among the 23 major general contractors, Shimizu Corporation had the largest number of employees with 10,494. Kajima Corporation and Taisei Corporation followed with 9,859 and 9,789 employees, respectively. (See figure below)

On the other hand, the general contractor with the fewest employees was the Zenitaka Corporation, with 1,009, followed by Daiho Corporation and Asanuma Corporation with 1,035 and 1,278, respectively. The average number of employees in the 23 companies was 4,192.
2. Employee count ranking of super general contractors
Next, when looking at the five super general contractors, Shimizu Corporation was the super general contractor with the largest number of employees at 10,494. Kajima Corporation, Taisei Corporation, Obayashi Corporation, and Takenaka Corporation followed with 9,859, 9,789, 9,754, and 8,042 employees respectively. (See figure below)

The difference in the number of employees between Shimizu Corporation and Takenaka Corporation is approximately 2,450, indicating that there is a large difference in the number of employees among the super general contractors. The average number of employees among super general contractors is about 9,588.
3. Employee count ranking of semi-major general contractors
Looking at the number of employees at the 10 semi-major general contractors, Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co., Ltd. was the semi-major general contractor with the most employees at 5,263. This is followed by Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd, Toda Construction, and Maeda Corporation with 4,889, 4,160, and 3,635 employees, respectively. (See figure below)

On the other hand, the semi-major general contractor with the fewest employees was Kumagai Corporation with 2,620, followed by Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd., Tokyu Construction Co., Ltd., and Haseko Corporation with 2,762, 2,777, and 3,249 employees, respectively. The average number of employees among semi-major general contractors is approximately 3,605, which is between the number of employees recorded at Maeda Corporation and Hazama Ando.
4. Employee count ranking of mid-sized general contractors
Looking at the number of employees at the eight mid-sized general contractors, Okumura Corporation had the largest number of employees with 2,530, followed by Tekken, Toa Corporation, and Toyo Construction Co., Ltd. with 2,132, 1,631, and 1,499 employees, respectively. (See figure below)

On the other hand, the mid-sized general contractor with the fewest employees was the Zenitaka Corporation with 1,009, followed by Daiho Corporation, Asanuma Corporation and Tobishima Corporation with 1,035, 1,278 and 1,317 employees, respectively. The average number of employees among mid-sized general contractors is approximately 1554, which is between the values recorded by Toa Corporation and Toyo Construction Co. Ltd.
5. Employee count comparison by general contractor size
The average number of employees for the five super general contractors was 9,588, the average for the 10 semi-major general contractors was 3,605, and the average for the eight mid-sized general contractors was 1,554. The average number of employees for the five super general contractors was 9,588, the average for the 10 semi-major general contractors was 3,605, and the average for the eight mid-sized general contractors was 1,554. This indicates that super general contractors are about 2.7 times larger than semi-major general contractors and about 6.2 times larger than mid-sized general contractors in terms of the average number of employees. (See figure below)

From the same perspective, semi-major general contractors are about 2.3 times larger than mid-sized general contractors. The average number of employees at 18 semi-major and mid-sized general contractors and 23 major general contractors is 2,694 and 4,192, respectively.
