Mid-Sized General Contractors
The term mid-sized general contractor in Japan is a generic term that refers to general contractors of a specific scale when general contractors are classified according to their company size.
Therefore, depending on the concept and definition of general contractors when classifying them according to the size of the company, the companies that fall under mid-sized general contractors may differ. In addition, although there is no clear definition of this classification, in general, general contractors with sales (non-consolidated) of more than 100 billion yen and other than super general contractors and semi-major general contractors are often classified as medium-sized general contractors.
In this case, the size of a mid-sized general contractor is generally between 1,000 and 2,500 employees (non-consolidated) and sales (non-consolidated) are generally between 100 billion yen and 300 billion yen. (See list below)
Mid-sized general contractors have a wide range of divisions, including design, engineering, and R&D divisions, in addition to construction divisions, and each company has its own unique construction methods and technologies.
In FY2020, the domestic general contractor market will be worth approximately 52.3784 trillion yen on a volume basis (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism), and the total sales of the 11 mid-sized general contractors (non-consolidated) will be approximately 1.7 trillion yen.
As of the end of March 2021, the ratio of orders received by the 11 medium-sized general contractors was 48% and 52%, respectively, with construction and civil engineering work accounting for roughly half of the total.
