Average Annual Salary Ranking of 23 Major General Contractors | 2021 edition
In this issue of the “State of General Contractors” series, which provides an overview of the status of Japan’s major general contractors based on their business performance, etc., we will introduce the average annual salary of the 23 major general contractors based on the average annual salaries of those employed by each company in the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2021.
Considering the fact that general contractors are generally classified according to their company size, we will introduce the following in detail.

1. Average annual salary ranking of the 23 major general contractors
First, among the 23 major general contractors, Kajima Corporation was the general contractor with the highest average annual salary at 11.35 million yen. Obayashi Corporation, Takenaka Corporation, and Taisei Corporation followed Kajima with 10.32 million yen, 10.07 million yen, and 9.85 million yen, respectively. (See figure below)
On the other hand, the general contractor with the lowest average annual salary was Kumagai Corporation at 8.802 million yen, followed by the Zenitaka Corporation, Daiho Corporation, and Toyo Construction Co., Ltd. at 8.02 million yen, 8.04 million yen, and 8.04 million yen, respectively, indicating a difference of 2 to 3 million yen from the top general contractors. The average for the 23 companies was 9.46 million yen.

2. Average annual salary ranking of super general contractors
Next, looking at the five super general contractors, Kajima Corporation was the super general contractor with the highest average annual salary of 11.352 million yen. Obayashi Corporation, Takenaka Corporation, Taisei Corporation and Shimizu Corporation followed with 10.32 million yen, 10.07 million yen, 9.85 million yen and 9.71 million yen respectively. (See figure below)

The difference in average annual salary between Kajima Corporation and Shimizu Corporation is approximately 1.64 million yen, indicating that there are differences even within general contractors within the same category. The average annual salary of the five super general contractors exceeded 10 million yen in three companies, and the average of the five was 10.26 million yen.
3. Average annual salary ranking of semi-major general contractors
Looking at the average annual salary of the 10 semi-major general contractors, Maeda Corporation was the semi-major general contractor with the highest average annual salary at 9.27 million yen. Haseko Corporation, Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd., and Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd. followed with 9.23 million yen, 8.78 million yen, and 8.66 million yen, respectively. (See figure below)

On the other hand, Kumagai Corporation was the semi-major general contractor with the lowest average annual salary at 8.02 million yen, followed by Hazama Ando, Toda Corporation, and Tokyu Construction Co., Ltd. at 8.53 million yen, 8.58 million yen, and 8.60 million yen, respectively. The average annual salary of semi-major general contractors was about 8.71 million yen, which is between the values recorded by that of Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd. and Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd.
4. Average annual salary ranking of mid-sized general contractors
Looking at the average annual salaries of the eight mid-sized general contractors, Okumura Corporation had the highest average annual salary at 9.32 million yen. Toa Corporation, Tekken Corporation, and Asanuma Corporation followed with 9.13 million yen, 8.48 million yen, and 8.31 million yen, respectively. (See figure below)

On the other hand, the lowest average annual salary for mid-sized general contractors was 8.02 million yen at the Zenitaka Corporation, followed by 8.04 million yen, 8.04 million yen, and 8.19 million yen for Daiho Corporation, Toyo Construction Co., Ltd., and Tobishima Corporation. The average for mid-sized general contractors is about 8.56 million yen, which is between the amounts recorded by Toa Corporation and Tekken Corporation.
5. Average annual salary comparison by general contractor size
The average annual salary of the five super general contractors was 10.262 million yen, the average of the ten semi-major general contractors was 8.713 million yen, and the average of the eight mid-sized general contractors was 8.563 yen. This indicates that the average annual salary of super general contractors is about 1.55 million yen higher than that of semi-major general contractors and about 1.7 million yen higher than that of mid-sized general contractors. Looking at it from the same perspective, the average annual salary of semi-major general contractors is about 150,000 yen higher than that of mid-sized general contractors. The average annual salary of 18 semi-major and mid-sized general contractors and 23 major general contractors was 8.674 million yen and 9.464 million yen, respectively.
