Ranking of Months of Construction at Hand in Japan for 23 Major General Contractors|2021 edition
In this issue of the “State of General Contractors” series, which provides an overview of the status of Japan’s major general contractors based on their business performance, etc., we will introduce the rankings for months of work at hand of the 23 major general contractors based on the months of work each company had in the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2021.
Considering the fact that general contractors are generally classified according to their company size, we will introduce the following in detail.

- Ranking of months of work at hand of super general contractors
- Ranking of months of work at hand of semi-major general contractors
- Ranking of months of work at hand of mid-sized general contractors

1. Ranking of months of work at hand of the 23 major general contractors
First, among the 23 major general contractors, Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co., Ltd. was the general contractor with the most months of work at 26.1 months. Taisei Corporation, Daiho Corporation, and Tobishima Corporation followed Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co., Ltd. with 25.1 months, 22.7 months, and 22.2 months, respectively. (See figure below)

On the other hand, the general contractor with the fewest months of work was Toyo Construction Co., Ltd. at 9.8 months, followed by Asanuma Corporation, Haseko Corporation, and Kumagai Gumi, which had 12.6 months, 12.8 months, and 15.5 months, respectively, showing a large gap of around 10 months compared to the top general contractors. The average of the 23 companies is 19.4 months.
2. Ranking of months of work at hand of super general contractors
Next, when looking at the five super general contractors, Taisei Corporation was the super general contractor with the most months of work at hand at 25.1 months. This was followed by Obayashi Corporation, Kajima Corporation, Shimizu Corporation, and Takenaka Corporation, which had 20.6 months, 18.9 months, 18.7 months, and 16.0 months of work, respectively. (See figure below)

The difference in the months of work between Taisei Corporation and Takenaka Corporation is more than 9.1 months, indicating that there is a significant difference in the number of months, even among super general contractors. The average of the five super general contractors is 19.9 months, which is an amount that is between the number of months recorded by Obayashi Corporation and Kajima Corporation.
3. Ranking of months of work at hand of semi-major general contractors
Next, a look at the months of work at hand of the 10 semi-major general contractors shows that Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co., Ltd is the semi-major general contractor with the most months at 26.1 months. Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd, Maeda Corporation, Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd., and Fujita Corporation followed with 22.0 months, 21.7 months, 19.6 months, and 19.2 months, respectively. (See figure below)

On the other hand, Haseko Corporation was the mid-sized general contractor with fewest months of work at hand at 12.8 months. Kumagai Gumi, Toda Corporation, Hazama Ando Corporation, and Tokyu Construction Co., Ltd. followed with 15.5 months, 18.7 months, 18.7 months, and 19.1 months, respectively. The average for the eight semi-major general contractors was about 19.0 months, which is an amount between the number of months recorded by Tokyu Construction Co., Ltd. and Hazama Ando Corporation.
4. Ranking of months of work at hand of mid-sized general contractors
Furthermore, looking at the eight mid-sized general contractors, the general contractor with the most number of months of work at hand was Daiho Corporation with 22.7 months. This was followed by Tobishima Corporation, Toa Corporation, and Okumura Corporation with 22.2 months, 21.2 months, and 20.2 months, respectively. (See figure below)

On the other hand, Toyo Construction Co., Ltd. was the mid-sized general contractor with fewest months of work at hand at 9.8 months. Asanuma Corporation, Tekken Corporation, and the Zenitaka Corporation followed with 12.6 months, 15.8 months, and 17.4 months, respectively. The average for the mid-sized general contractors was about 17.7 months, which is between the number of months recorded by Okumura Corporation and the Zenitaka Corporation.
5. Comparison of months of work at hand by general contractor size
The average months of work at hand recorded by the five super general contractors is 19.9 months. The average months of work at hand recorded by the 10 semi-major general contractors is 19.0 months. The average months of work at hand recorded by the eight mid-sized general contractors is 17.7 months. (See figure below)

This indicates the five super general contractors have the longest number of months of work at hand, followed by the 10 semi-major general contractors. The eight mid-sized general contractors have the shortest number of months of work at hand. The averages for the 18 semi-major and mid-sized general contractors and the 23 major general contractors were 18.7 months and 19.4 months, respectively.
