Project Management Method
The PM method (Project Management Method) in Japan is one of the methods used to order construction and design work.
In the PM method, a selected PMr (project manager) acts as the client’s agent and manages the project, making comprehensive adjustments and controls to ensure that the plan meets the client’s requirements and that the project is completed within budget and within the construction period.
The PMr is said to have the authority to coordinate and manage the designers, constructors, consultants, and other related parties as the client’s agent, in order to achieve the project on time and within budget.
However, in actual projects, the PMr’s involvement and the scope of authority vary from project to project, including cases where the PMr participates in the project only in various coordination roles to support the client, cases where the PMr is responsible for various management tasks, and cases where the PMr acts as the client’s agent to approve drawings and changes.
In Japan, the CM method (construction management method) is a method in which the CMr (construction manager) participates mainly from the planning and design stages and manages the design and construction from a technical perspective. In contrast, the PM method is a method in which the PMr participates from the upstream stage of the project, such as conceptualization and planning, and manages the project from a position of authority to comprehensively coordinate and manage the entire project.
